Chinese e-commerce giant JD reported its net revenues for the second quarter of 2021 reached 253.8 billion yuan ($39.3 billion), an increase of 26.2 percent from the same period last year.

Its income from operations for the second quarter of 2021 was 300.8 million yuan, compared to 5 billion yuan for the same period last year. Annual active customer accounts increased by 27.4 percent to 531.9 million in the 12 months ending June 30 from 417.4 million in the 12 months ending June 30, 2020.

Its research and development expenses came up to 3.7 billion yuan for the second quarter, as compared to 3.6 billion yuan for the second quarter of 2020.

"Over the past 18 years since our founding, JD has always placed the interests of our customers, partners and employees foremost while upholding our long-standing business principle of doing business the right way," said Liu Qiangdong, JD's chairman and CEO.

"Today, JD has become China's leading supply chain-based technology and service company, serving a growing base of millions of partners and 532 million customers."

Liu added that with hundreds of thousands of full-time employees and its next generation smart supply chain and infrastructure network, JD has become a new type of real-economy based enterprise supporting China's development for the long-term.

Sandy Xu, JD's chief financial officer, said the June 18 online shopping carnival helped the company to add over 32 million new users in the second quarter, the largest single quarter increase in JD's history.

In addition, as of June 30, JD Logistics, the company's logistics arm, operated approximately 1,200 warehouses, which cover an aggregate gross floor area of approximately 23 million square meters, including warehouse space for cloud warehouses managed under the JD Logistics Open Warehouse Platform.
